Explaining Germany – Getting to know Ukraine: An intergenerational online project
In the summer of 2025, ILEU, together with local senior citizens and the German-language high school in Odessa, launched an intergenerational pilot project under the motto „Explaining Germany – Getting to know Ukraine.“ Further information

The first main phase of the project, involving 12 pairs, has been underway since November: Seniors from all over Germany are connecting with tenth-grade students from Odessa who have been learning German since first grade. This project gives them the opportunity to practice their language skills and get to know Germany through conversations with their senior partners. In return, German adults can learn more about the lives and prospects of young people in Ukraine.
Following the successful pilot phase, the plan is to continue the project with more young people and seniors and to extend it to other countries in the Danube region.
Project goals:
- Language practice & intercultural exchange for young people from the Danube region
- Personal insights into life in their home countries, culture and traditions for German participants:
- Collaborative learning, discussion, and discovery – in writing or via video conference
- Building trust, understanding and solidarity
How does it work?
- School year 2025/2026
- Duration : 8–10 weeks
- Method of exchange : Email, messenger or Zoom – flexible depending on the tandem.
- Contents : Open topics – based on questions from the students
- Time required : approx. 1 hour/week
